White Hawks Fall to the #4 Ranked Fridley Tigers

By Christy Zachow, 11/08/20, 1:45PM CST

The Class 4A #4 ranked 3-0 Fridley Tigers hosted the Mound Westonka White Hawks on Friday, October 30th for a 6pm game. The White Hawks, who were playing without several key starters, started off with a slow but steady first drive down the field, taking 11 minutes off the clock. Despite the solid march, the White Hawks had to settle for a 3 point field goal by Neve. While it wasn’t the 7 they hoped for, they were happy to score first and turned their focus to defense.

The Fridley tigers pounced fast with a 63 yard kickoff return. They fell short of the goal and the White Hawks line held them off but on the 4th and final try, they punched through the line scoring 6. Anderly broke up the extra point attempt, holding the Tigers to 6. The White Hawks couldn’t respond and it became quickly obvious why the Tigers came into this game 3-0 and the #4 ranked team in the state. While the Tigers continued to make big plays, the White Hawks continued to give up big plays. Fast forward fifteen minutes and the White Hawks entered halftime down 20-3.

The second half was not much different for either team. The Tigers continued their ground attack rushing for 171 yards and they produced 184 yards in the air. The White Hawks fell flat, not able to score again. By the time the game ended, the Tigers had solidified a 34-3 victory on their home field.

Coach David commented on the loss, “We are really banged up right now.  We have several key players out with injuries and our young guys are working hard and trying to step up but we were outmatched tonight.  We are facing some great teams, some of the best in the state and they are making plays. We are struggling to implement our game plan but we will keep preparing and working hard for next week. We believe that if we are able to get healthy, that we can compete with anyone.”

The 1-3 White Hawks are looking forward to their “better-late-than-never” Homecoming game on Friday, November 6th at 7pm. Mound Westonka faces off against the 0-4 St. Anthony Village Huskies. Coach David continued, “Like us, St. Anthony Village has had a tough schedule so their record is deceiving. This team has been in the section finals the past two seasons, and will be another tough matchup for us. We will have some key players out this week and several players will need to step up and play both ways as well as in new roles. We look forward to the challenge and are excited to at least have a Homecoming game. For a while we weren’t even sure we’d get this opportunity.”
